Japan's government resigns ahead of election of new prime minister

The entire Japanese government has resigned ahead of the election of a new prime minister in the country's parliament, Kyodo news agency reports.

The election of the prime minister will be held on November 11, at a special session of the parliament following the elections to the lower house held on October 27.

Earlier, on October 1, Japan announced a new government. Gen Nakatani, who held this post in 2014-2016, became the Minister of Defense. Takeshi Iwaya, the former Minister of Defense in 2018-2019, was also appointed head of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Earlier, it was reported that the head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Shigeru Ishiba was elected the new prime minister of Japan.

The resignation of the current government is a standard procedure before the election of a new head of the cabinet in Japan.
