Today, an online meeting was held between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Ms. Inger Andersen. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reports this.

The parties confirmed the importance of consolidating efforts in resolving global environmental problems.

During the meeting, the topic of creating a Regional Center for Technologies related to Climate Change for Central Asian countries with headquarters in Ashgabat was discussed.

The parties also exchanged views on the practical implementation of the Global Methane Commitment, which Turkmenistan joined during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28). It was noted that work has begun on a joint project with the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) to develop a mechanism for regularly providing updated data on emissions detected by the MARS system.

The interlocutors discussed the possibilities of expanding interaction between Turkmenistan and UNEP on the development of the “Caspian Environmental Initiative,” the proposal for the creation of which was made by the President of Turkmenistan during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

In conclusion, Inger Andersen thanked the Turkmen side for the invitation to take part in the Regional Conference on Food Security in the Conditions of Climate Change, which is planned to be held in Turkmenistan in November, the source notes.
