A group of Turkish researchers, in collaboration with Italian perfumers, have resurrected the legendary scent of Julius Caesar, known as Telinum. Information about this unique project appeared on the Arkeonews portal, writes gazeta.ru.
To recreate the composition of the perfume, scientists turned to ancient sources, including the records of Caesar's contemporaries. The result was a complex composition that included mint, rose, citrus notes of lemon and bergamot, lavender, jasmine, water lily, violet, woody notes of oud and cedar, patchouli and amber. The aroma is especially refined by the flowers of iris and cistus, which were considered rare and valuable ingredients in ancient times.
Researchers note that most Romans preferred simpler aromatic compositions. For example, a mixture of rose oil and gladiator sweat was popular. Narcissus, primrose and almond were also used. However, the elite, military leaders and priests sought to stand out by using exotic foreign scents and rare components.
Caesar's Perfume is expected to go on sale in October this year and will be available in Türkiye, France and Italy.
