62 years old Richard Slyman who received a pig kidney transplant in March 2024, died two months after the operation. Doctors have not established a connection between the patient's death and the transplant. This was reported by rbc.ru with reference to the Associated Press.

Slyman suffered from hypertension and type 2 diabetes. In 2018, he received a donor kidney, but five years later it stopped functioning. In March 2024, he was transplanted with a kidney from a genetically modified pig, in which animal genes were replaced with human ones. The operation was successful and the patient was discharged from the hospital.

The surgeons assumed that the transplanted kidney would last at least two years.

“After the transplant, Rick said that one of the reasons he had the procedure was to give hope to the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive. Rick has achieved this goal and his hope and optimism will continue forever”, - his family said in a statement.
