A team of Chinese doctors using a robot and 5G technology successfully performed remote surgery to remove stomach cancer from a 51 years old patient. This was reported by 1prof.by with reference to Medicalxpress.
This innovative approach could usher in a new era in the treatment of many diseases, especially in remote areas with limited access to medical care.
The developers reported that the robot's response delay due to the use of telecommunications was minimal. The operation took place without any complications, and the patient recovered quickly.
Previously, telemedicine was used for urological and orthopedic surgeries, but gastric surgeries with its help were performed only on animals and dead bodies.
“These are the first clinical trials of this technology, which have shown its effectiveness and safety. We believe that the results obtained from the procedure will provide a solid basis for the future use of telemedicine in the treatment of patients with gastric cancer”, - said Professor Qun Zhao, the head of the group of doctors.
Experts predict an increase in demand for robotic surgical devices in 2024.
The surgical robotics market will grow at an average rate of 8% and will reach 15,8 billion USD by 2030.
