A meeting was held in Geneva between the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office Vepa Hajiyev and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
At the meeting, the Turkmen side emphasized that the UN is a priority partner of Turkmenistan, which is committed to the values and principles of the United Nations. Therefore, Turkmenistan considers it important to maintain close contacts with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, reports the online publication Vestiabad.ru.
In this context, the role of the OHCHR Regional Office for Central Asia, created in 2008 in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), was especially noted.
In turn, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasized the importance of cooperation in the Central Asian region in the context of protecting fundamental human rights. He noted the commitment of the UN Office for Human Rights to ensure the protection of human rights for all, to expand opportunities for the realization of these rights and to assist decision-makers in achieving this goal. It is also important to strengthen the capacity of civil society to effectively use UN human rights programs.
At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue to expand bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN OHCHR.
