In Florence, for the first time, a “secret room” will be opened to the public in the building of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, in which the great artist Michelangelo lived and worked. The genius was forced to settle in a modest apartment after he fell out of favor with the Medici family. TASS reported this.
Michelangelo worked for the Medici, but in 1527 he supported a rebellion against them. After the Medici family returned to power, the artist found himself out of favor and forced to leave his home. He settled in a small room above the sacristy, where the rector of the temple permitted him to stay.
During his stay in the 10x3 meter room, Michelangelo left his mark on the walls of the room, decorating them with numerous drawings.
“It has been established that they were made by the hand of Michelangelo. All researchers agree with this. Only some believe that all the drawings, without exception, belong to the master; some believe that some belong to his students and followers. But in time they all belong to the same period. And everything is of the highest quality”, - noted the Medici Chapel Museum.
Michelangelo's “Secret Room” was previously available only to specialists. In order to let the public into it, a special lighting system was created that does not harm the drawings. Visits to each group are limited to 15 minutes, followed by a break of 45 minutes of complete darkness.
