On the territory of the ancient city of Carthage, a golden treasure was found, the age of which was determined by archaeologists to be 2300 years, reported the "MIR 24" portal.

Since the treasure was found on the site of an ancient sanctuary, it was concluded that the valuables were intended as an offering to the gods. In addition to several gold coins with a diameter of 2,5 centimeters, archaeologists found tombstones and urns with the remains of sacrificial animals and people. The coins, most likely, were left by the rich inhabitants of Carthage to the main deities - the god Hammon and the goddess Tanit.

Carthage, founded around 900 BC, was one of the cultural, economic and political centers of the ancient world. It was the center of the Punic civilization in Africa, as well as the capital of the province, which at that time was part of the Roman Empire. At present time, Carthage is located on the territory of the state of Tunisia.
