The Tilos Greek Island in the Mediterranean has been officially certified as the world's first zero-waste island, writes “Europulse”.
90% of all waste on the island is recycled or used as a basis for natural fertilizers, there are no landfills.
Work to reduce the amount of waste on Tilos began in 2021. Residents began to receive special bags for sorting garbage, to conduct conversations with them on proper waste management. Garbage removal and disposal are monitored using a special monitoring system.
As a result of these measures, the island has achieved not only a near-zero waste level, but also a 43% reduction in waste per capita.
