In Florida, USA, decorative lion-headed rabbits, released by a careless owner into the wild two years ago, have bred, writes Insider.
The lion-headed breed of rabbit got its name from the luxurious woolen collar around the neck, reminiscent of a lion's mane. This is an ornamental breed, and it was believed that in the wild they would not survive.
The former owner of the rabbits released about a hundred of them, but very soon the rabbits began to multiply rapidly, in addition, they adapted well to life outside the home. Now bred rabbits gnaw wires, spoil lawns and leave the fruits of their life everywhere.
The state's environmental activists don't know what to do with so many rabbits. So far, a campaign has been announced to raise money for their capture, but it is not possible to place the entire population in good hands with new owners. Lionhead rabbits are considered difficult to keep, they need a special diet that is not the same as that of ordinary rabbits.
