One of the British film companies fell victim to scammers who used the voice clone of actor Benedict Cumberbatch, writes DailyMail.

The company received a call from a man whose voice turned out to be very similar to the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch, and said that he had read their new script and would like to star in a new film based on it. “Benedict Cumberbatch” was willing to discuss the size of his fee.

Later, however, representatives of the studio began to suspect something, since the actor's agent could not clearly answer the question of where they found the script for the new film, which was not published; the number from which Cumberbatch called them turned out to be suspiciously long, and then requests began to transfer 200 thousand pounds before even meeting in person. At the same time, the actor ignored persistent requests to meet in person. Shortly after the suggestion of a face-to-face meeting at the studio, Cumberbatch's communication with studio representatives ceased completely.

Voice clones, created by artificial intelligence and imitating the voices of real people with high quality, are actively used by telephone and Internet scammers.
