Spanish doctors from Barcelona have performed the world's first lung transplant using a robot called “Da Vinci”, reported the information portal El nacional.cat.

All manipulations were performed by a robot controlled by surgeons. The donor organ was transplanted through an 8-centimeter incision, although surgeons typically have to make an incision of about 30 centimeters and completely open the chest cavity, pushing the ribs apart.

The “arms” of the robot, guided by the surgeons, carried out all the necessary manipulations, first to remove the donor lung, and then to transplant it into the patient.

Such a sparing operation permitted not only to reduce trauma to a minimum, but also to remove postoperative pain and shorten the healing process.
