The musical “The Phantom of the Opera” will no longer be shown on Broadway, reports “Kommersant” with reference to the Associated Press. The reason is called financial problems due to the pandemic: the proceeds from the shows of the musical no longer cover the cost of productions.
The last show was on April 16 at the Majestic Theater on Broadway. The performance ended with a standing ovation, champagne and confetti. In total, “The Phantom of the Opera” has been watched by nearly 20 million people on Broadway since 1988, bringing 1,3 billion USD to the box office.
“The Phantom of the Opera” became the longest-running musical on the Broadway stage, running continuously for 35 years.
