Women in Saudi Arabia have received the right to perform the Hajj without the obligatory accompaniment of a male family member (mahram), reported TASS, with reference to information provided on the official website of the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (small pilgrimage).

Saudi Deputy Minister for Hajj and Umrah Abdel Fattah Mashat said the country's authorities had decided “not to require the presence of a mahram for women performing the Hajj this year”.

A citizen of Saudi Arabia or a woman with a residence permit in this country who plans to make a pilgrimage to the Islamic shrines in Mecca and Medina must apply. Now, in the column of the questionnaire about the male family member accompanying her, no one can be indicated, but in this case a woman can perform the Hajj only as part of a group of female pilgrims.

Mandatory pilgrimage to the places of Muslim shrines in Mecca and Medina - hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. This year, the Hajj rites will be at the very end of June.
