Parliamentary elections in Turkmenistan will be held in 2023. This was stated by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, speaking today with a keynote speech at a meeting of the State Council in Ashgabat, reports the electronic version of the newspaper “Turkmenistan”.

“I want to draw your attention to an extremely important event that will be in 2023. In particular, a number of similar events will be held next year: we must hold elections for deputies of the Mejlis, members of the velayat, etrap and city halk maslahaty, and also Gengeshes. In this regard, it is necessary to start preparing these elections today”, said Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

According to him, representatives of the National Parliament play a big role in social and political activities.

“I firmly believe that the members of the National Parliament in the future will work fruitfully for the sake of the well-being of our people, make a worthy contribution to improving the country's legislation, explain to the people the norms and principles of laws, promote the policy of the state, and also take an active part in holding the upcoming elections at a high level", - emphasized the head of Turkmenistan.

Let us remind that in the last parliamentary elections held in Turkmenistan in 2018, 284 candidates competed for 125 seats in the Mejlis. 168 of them were nominated by three political parties - the Democratic Party, the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Agrarian Party. The remaining 116 candidates ran from groups of citizens.
