The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have launched a partnership to expand cooperation in renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy storage and other areas to help accelerate the decarbonization of the Central Asian electricity sector, according to a press release USAID.

USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator for Asia Anjali Kaur and EBRD Managing Director for Central Asia Zsuzsanna Hargitai signed a memorandum of Understanding at the Almaty University of Energy and Telecommunications.

According to Kaur, the United States and the Central Asian countries share a common vision to solve one of the most serious problems of our time – the global climate crisis.

She also noted that climate change mitigation efforts should include upgrading electricity systems, as more than 40 percent of CO2 emissions from the energy sector come from electricity generation.
