Serdar Berdimuhamedov was elected new President of Turkmenistan

Vice Prime Minister Serdar Berdimuhamedov was elected the new President of Turkmenistan. The Central Election Commission for Elections and Referendums of Turkmenistan announced it today.

“In accordance with Article 76 of the Electoral Code of Turkmenistan and on the basis of the decision of the Central Election Commission of March 14, 2022, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Serdar Gurbangulyevich Berdimuhamedov, who received 72.97% of the votes, was recognized the elected President of Turkmenistan,” the CEC website says.

The remaining candidates for the post of the President of Turkmenistan received the following number of votes:

  • Khydyr Nunnaev - 11.09%
  • Agadzhan Bekmyradov - 7.22%
  • Berdymammet Kurbanov - 2.22%
  • Perkhat Begenjov - 2.02%
  • Maksatmyrat Ovezgeldiev - 1.16%
  • Maksat Odeshov - 1.15%
  • Kakageldi Saryev - 1.09%
  • Babamyrat Meredov - 1.08%

The country's Central Election Commission also reported that out of 3,460,080 total registered voters in the country, 3,362,052 voted, which accounted for 97.17%.

During the election period, the Mission of observers from the CIS, SCO and a number of neighboring countries was in Turkmenistan, which had the opportunity to review the election campaign on the spot.

As we reported earlier, the inauguration of the new President will take place on March 19.

The new President of Turkmenistan is 40 years old. In 2001, Serdar Berdimuhamedov graduated from the Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov with a degree in process engineering. In 2011, he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation with a degree in international relations, and in 2013 from the Geneva Center for Security Policy with a degree in European and International Security. In 2013-2016, he worked as Deputy Director of the State Agency for Management and Use of Hydrocarbon Resources under the President of Turkmenistan.

The political career of Serdar Berdimuhamedov began in the fall of 2016. Then he was elected to the Mejlis. In 2017-2018, he worked as the Chairman of the Committee on Legislation and Norms of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. In 2018, he was appointed to the post of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. In January-June 2019, he worked as the Deputy Head of Akhal Region.

In June 2019, Serdar Berdimuhamedov headed the Administration of Akhal Region. In February 2020, he was appointed to the post of Minister of Industry and Construction Production of Turkmenistan. In February - July 2021, he worked as Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Chairman of the Supreme Control Chamber of Turkmenistan, Member of the State Security Council of Turkmenistan. Since July 2021 - Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan for economy, banks and international financial organizations.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov is fluent in three languages - Turkmen, Russian and English.
