The two-day online seminar “International practice and norms of interaction of national human rights institutions with law enforcement agencies, associations of lawyers and international human rights institutions” was organized by the Office of the Plenipotentiary Representative for Human Rights in Turkmenistan in conjunction with UNDP with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The seminar was chaired by international expert Petr Iiscola, who presented the effective and successful international mechanisms of interaction between the Office of the Ombudsman and law enforcement agencies and other state institutions in the field of human rights protection in accordance with the Paris Principles.
Akmurat Danatarov, UNDP Program Analyst on Governance, Economic Diversification and Inclusive Growth, noted:
“This seminar aims to raise awareness among law enforcement officials, lawyers about international best practices for cooperation between the Office of the Ombudsman and law enforcement agencies, as well as the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, guidance on the role of prosecutors, UN principles and guidelines on access to legal aid. in criminal justice systems”.
The events were organized with the financial support of the Government of Canada within the framework of the project “Strengthening the institutional capacity of the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan”, implemented jointly by UNDP in Turkmenistan with the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights in Turkmenistan.
