The high-level regional dialogue "strengthening transport connectivity in the SPECA region and beyond during the COVID-19 period" was held today via videoconference. The Event was organized by the government of Turkmenistan in close cooperation with the UN, its regional commissions and relevant specialized agencies, the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reports.
The forum was attended by: UN under-Secretary-General Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu, Executive Secretary of the UN economic Commission for Europe Olga Algaerova, heads and responsible representatives of the UN Economic and social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), UN Office for the coordination of development activities, Minister of public works of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Deputy Ministers of transport of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, experts and experts from international organizations, engaged in multilateral economic cooperation, in particular in the field of transport and communications development.
The meeting discussed issues of multilateral partnership in the field of transport during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to adapt the economic systems of Central Asian States and neighboring regions to the current situation in the world economy as a result of the spread of a new type of infection.
Heads of international organizations and high-level delegations stressed the special importance of consolidating international efforts to improve the efficiency of international transport corridors, and emphasized the need to develop new international legal mechanisms to ensure the operation of transport systems in emergency situations.
The Turkmen side stressed that at the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan, the UN General Assembly adopted resolutions in the field of sustainable transport by consensus in 2014, 2015 and 2017, and the first UN global conference on sustainable transport was organized in Ashgabat in 2016. The final document of this Forum became the legal basis for the formation of new approaches to a broad international partnership in the field of transport.
Developing the above-mentioned initiatives, the President of Turkmenistan, in his speech at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, proposed to discuss the draft resolution of the General Assembly prepared by the Turkmen side on ensuring stable international transport during emergencies.
As a result, an agreed document was adopted that included the main conclusions of the regional dialogue.
