The leadership of the Asian Football Confederation announced that the video assistance system for referees (VAR) will be used in this season of the AFC Champions League, starting with the 1/8 final. This is reported by Olamsport.

The video assistance system for referees (also known as VAR) is a technology in football that allows the chief referee to make decisions using video replays. Officially included in the rules of the game of football in 2018 after a series of tests at international tournaments. System video help allows you to view four types of controversial issues and to help the judge make the right decision: violations of rules at the goals scored, the episodes with the penalty, an erroneous red card (the episodes with the second yellow is not considered) and mistakes in the identification of punished players (helps to identify who has committed a foul, put card). Thus, the video assistance system allows you to officially identify and confirm the "obvious errors" of the referee during the match.

The AFC will send commissions to study the situation in each individual country and in each club. They will check existing VAR systems, determine the technical capabilities of stadiums and conditions for the work of referees in arenas. The goal of the Commission is to bring the technical condition of stadiums to a common denominator, so that the VAR system is used at all matches.

The AFC understands that they may face a situation where one or more stadiums will not meet the requirements and the VAR system will not be able to be used at the matches of these teams. In this case, the clubs will still play their home games at their stadiums, but without the VAR system. However, the absence of the VAR system in one match does not cancel its application in another match of the same pair.

Matches of the 1/8 final of the AFC Champions League are scheduled for August 11, 2020, but the timing may be shifted.
