Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan (UoIE) conducted a fruit tree production workshop for orchard owners and agronomists in Ashgabat, says a press release from the US Embassy in Turkmenistan.
During the workshop, USAID’s horticulture advisor shared key techniques and technologies to sustainably maximize production of high-value fruits with high export potential such as cherries, apples, and grapes. By equipping orchard owners with horticultural best practices and supporting export promotion, USAID and the UoIE aim to build sustainable links between Turkmen producers and new target markets.
Addressing the participants, acting USAID Country Director for Turkmenistan Mr. Daniel VerSchneider noted, “Horticulture is an important sector for the economy of Turkmenistan and, together with the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, USAID is committed to transferring new technologies and techniques to local farmers in order to increase the quality and quantity of their produce, improve export potential, and create new employment opportunities in rural areas.”
USAID and the UoIE developed the workshop through USAID’s Competiveness, Trade, and Jobs activity, a five-year project that facilitates exports and employment in horticulture and strengthens transport and logistics services across the five Central Asian economies.
