Unprecedented rainfall in the east and south of Spain has led to tragic consequences - at least 95 people have fallen victim to devastating flooding, most of the deaths were registered in the Valencia region, daily.afisha.ru reports with reference to Reuters and the BBC.

The disaster, which has become the largest in the last 30 years, broke out after a year's worth of rain fell in Valencia in eight hours. The elements turned the streets into turbulent streams that swept away everything in their path: they tore out trees, destroyed bridges and buildings. Agricultural areas, where the bulk of Spanish citrus fruits are grown, were especially hard hit.

Local residents were forced to seek refuge on the roofs of buildings and cars. Many spent the night on high ground, waiting for help from rescuers. As a result of the natural disaster, about 150 thousand people were left without electricity, and rail links with the country's largest cities were disrupted.

Authorities warn that the death toll could rise – exact figures on the dead are not yet available. Due to the scale of the tragedy, a three-day mourning has been declared in the country.
