A new study conducted by specialists from the German Institute of Human Nutrition challenges established ideas about the harm of various food components. The results of the experiment, published on the Scientific Reports platform, show that sugar may be more dangerous to brain health than fats, reports runews24.ru.
Scientists studied the effects of different types of nutrition on the activity of AgRP neurons in mice. The rodents were given a diet high in fat and sugar, after which their brain activity was analyzed.
Contrary to previous assumptions, the study did not find any significant negative impact of a high-fat diet on the brain. On the contrary, it was simple carbohydrates that demonstrated the most pronounced negative impact on neural activity.
It is assumed that excessive sugar consumption disrupts the brain's energy balance and may increase the risk of developing metabolic diseases, including obesity and diabetes.
