At the upcoming Forum in Paris to attract investments in the oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan (TEIF 2024), the issue of an effective way to reduce methane emissions from the Darvaza gas crater will be discussed.

This was reported by the vestiabad publication with a link from Asmannews.

During the panel discussion, specialists from Turkmenistan, together with leading experts from the UN, OPEC, IEA and international companies, will present their views on reducing methane and carbon dioxide emissions during hydrocarbon production.

Experts believe that Turkmenistan has the potential to reduce methane emissions on its territory by approximately 75%. Such emission reductions will be an important contribution of Turkmenistan to achieving SDG7 related to sustainable energy and meeting commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change.

As part of the proposed measures, the possibility of including one of the observation wells located near the active crater into the operational fund is also being considered. This will allow for intensive gas extraction from the upper productive formations.

Satellite imagery data obtained by Capterio shows a significant reduction in combustion volumes between September 2023 and February 2024, when intensive gas extraction from nearby wells was carried out.

Let us remind you that the Turkmen Energy Investment Forum (TEIF 2024) will be held in Paris on April 24-25.

We previously reported that Turkmen scientists have proposed an effective method for reducing methane emissions from the Darvaza crater.
