According to mathematical modeling carried out by scientists, in 500 years all Japanese may have the same surname - Sato. “MIR 24” reports this.

Today, Sato is the most common surname in the country, with about 1,5% of the population having it. In Japan, the law obliges a wife to take her husband's surname upon marriage.

It is predicted that if current trends continue, this surname will gradually supplant all others.

Another scenario is possible if the legislation is relaxed and women are permitted to keep their maiden name after marriage.
