The “Day of Silence” has begun in Azerbaijan before the early presidential elections, which will be held on February 7. During this day, any election campaigning, events and meetings of candidates with voters are prohibited, trend.az reports.
Seven candidates are running for president, but the portraits that could be seen on city streets on February 5 had been removed by 08:00 local time on February 6. The only reminders of the approaching election day are posters calling on citizens of the country to come to the polling stations. A countdown to the start of voting has been launched on the website of the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan.
Ilham Aliyev became the first registered candidate to participate in the presidential elections. On December 26, 50 thousand signatures in support of his candidacy were submitted to the Central Election Commission.
The early presidential elections are the ninth presidential election in the country and the second in a row. The president is elected for a term of seven years; there are no restrictions on the number of terms.
