In 2023, a record number of climbers died on Everest (Qomolungma) - 18 people. This is more than in any other year since the summit was first reached in 1953. In just 70 years, 317 people died while climbing Everest. AiF reports this with reference to The Himalayan Database.

Acute mountain sickness is the leading cause of death among climbers on Everest. It occurs due to a lack of oxygen at high altitudes, which can lead to swelling of the brain. Symptoms of acute mountain sickness include hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, headache, and others. In 2023, it claimed the lives of eight climbers.

In addition, climbers may face other dangers on Everest, such as physical exertion, dehydration and unstable weather.
