2023 FIBA World Championship: Everything you need to know before the tournament starts

One of the main basketball events of the year - the World Championship - will begin soon. From August 25 to September 10, viewers will follow the rivalry between the young US team, European NBA stars and other teams that are fighting for tickets to the 2024 Olympics. In this material, we have prepared for you a brief overview of what awaits you at the world championship.

For the first time in the history of basketball, the World Cup will be held in three Asian countries: the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. The tournament will consist of two group stages and a playoff. At the first stage, the teams are divided into eight groups of four:

  • Group A: Angola; Dominican Republic; Philippines; Italy
  • Group B: South Sudan; Serbia; China; Puerto Rico
  • Group C: USA; Jordan; Greece; New Zealand
  • Group D: Egypt; Mexico; Montenegro; Lithuania
  • Group E: Germany; Finland; Australia; Japan
  • Group F: Slovenia; Cape Verde; Georgia; Venezuela
  • Group G: Iran; Spain; Ivory Coast; Brazil
  • Group H: Canada; Latvia; Lebanon; France
  • The top two teams from each group will continue to compete for medals in four new groups: I, J, K and L. From there, the top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. Teams that finish third or fourth in the first round will also play a few more matches in Groups M, N, O and P to determine their positions from 17th to 32nd.
  • Games of the first stage will be played at two stadiums in Manila, one in Okinawa and one in Jakarta. The second stage will also be divided between these cities. The playoffs will take place in Manila. In total, 92 matches will be played at the tournament, and the final is scheduled for September 10 at 17:40 Ashgabat time.
  • According to the official FIBA ranking, the top 5 best participating teams are as follows: USA, France, Australia, Slovenia, Germany.
