Researchers at the University of Kansas have developed a “vaccine” for Alzheimer’s disease. The results of this study were published in the journal Antioxidants.

As it is known, beta-amyloid plaques formed in the brain in Alzheimer’s disease are oxidized over time and the methionine residues in them are converted into methionine sulfoxide (MetO). The scientists given this fact created a MetO-rich recombinant protein based on a protein isolated from corn. In studies in mice that are predisposed to Alzheimer’s disease, this protein led to the production of antibodies against MetO. And already 10 months after the “vaccination”, the rodents coped better with the tasks of passing the Y-shaped maze, searching for a platform under water, and other memory tests.

It is noted that in the vaccinated mice, the memory worked 50% better than in the control group. Researchers consider that their development will help delay or prevent Alzheimer’s disease, announced mir24.
