Turkmenistan and Iran intend to expand cooperation in the energy sector. The key project will be the construction of the Mary-Mashhad power transmission line with a capacity of 500/400 kV and a length of 155 kilometers. This became known during negotiations between the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian, writes the State News Agency of Turkmenistan.

The new power line will be laid from the city of Mary to Serakhs and further to the Turkmen-Iranian border. This project is designed to significantly increase the volume of electricity supplies between the two countries and strengthen the energy security of the region.

The parties noted successful cooperation in the field of electricity, pointing to the existing routes for the export of Turkmen electricity to Iran: Balkanabat-Gonbat and Shatlyk-Sarakhs. Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty emphasized the readiness of Turkmenistan to begin implementing new joint projects in the near future.

In addition to the electricity sector, cooperation in the gas sector was discussed. As previously reported, Turkmenistan plans to increase gas supplies to Iran to 40 billion cubic meters per year. To achieve this goal, modernization of the gas pipeline infrastructure, construction of new facilities and attraction of investments are required.

In this context, it was noted that it is planned to build two gas compressor stations and a gas pipeline with a length of 125 kilometers on the territory of Turkmenistan. This will permit the supply of additional volumes of Turkmen natural gas to Iran to the “Çaloýuk” gas measuring station.

Continuing the topic, it was emphasized that in the near future, under the SWAP scheme, it is planned to export Turkmen natural gas to the Republic of Iraq and further to Türkiye.
