As part of an active policy to develop international energy cooperation, Turkmenistan and Türkiye discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. The visit of Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar to Ashgabat on July 30-31 was an important step in strengthening the partnership between the two countries, TDH reports.

During the meeting with President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, key areas of cooperation in the gas, gas-chemical and electric power industries were discussed. The President of Turkmenistan emphasized the importance of interaction in these areas and outlined priority tasks for the implementation of joint projects. Minister Bayraktar, in turn, assured of Turkey’s readiness to deepen bilateral relations and support Turkmenistan’s energy initiatives.

In addition, the parties discussed the possibility of Turkish companies participating in the development of rich deposits of natural resources of Turkmenistan, such as potassium salt, iodine and metal ores. It is planned to create modern high-tech and export-oriented production facilities on the basis of these deposits.

It should be noted that Turkish companies already have significant experience working in Turkmenistan. As part of international consortia, they participated in the construction of large enterprises for the production of urea, liquid ammonia, sulfuric acid and synthetic gasoline (GTG). This experience creates a solid basis for further cooperation in the energy sector.

Another important topic of the negotiations was the supply of electricity from Turkmenistan to Turkey. It was emphasized that one of the immediate prospects in this matter could be the export of Turkmen electricity from a 1,574 megawatt power plant being built on the Turkmen shore of the Caspian Sea. Turkish partners, together with global electric power companies, have already implemented a number of projects in Turkmenistan for the construction and commissioning of modern power plants that produce electricity supplied both to the domestic market and to foreign countries.

In general, Minister Bayraktar’s visit demonstrated the active position of Turkmenistan and Turkey in the context of deepening bilateral relations in strategically important areas of cooperation.
