Italian surgeons have made a breakthrough in the field of regenerative medicine, for the first time in the world, restoring the mobility of a paralyzed arm using a transplant of nerve tissue from the leg. RIA reports this with reference to the press service of the Scientific and Medical Center of Turin.

The operation was performed on a 55-year-old medical worker who was involved in an accident about six months ago. As a result of the accident, the man lost part of his left leg and suffered a serious injury to his left shoulder.

Doctors from the Scientific and Medical Center of Turin performed a complex 12-hour operation, during which they managed to connect the severed nerves of the arm with the branch of the peroneal nerve.

This operation became possible thanks to four years of research work carried out by Italian scientists.
