February 14 – St. Valentine's Day, Valentine's Day. This day is celebrated, as a rule, by everyone who is in a relationship. The mass nature of this unofficial holiday, however, sometimes makes those who are not in a romantic relationship feel out of place and even a little deprived, although the lack of romance in life does not upset them in general. But folk wisdom says that you can create a holiday for yourself out of the blue, you just need to find a suitable occasion.

If you want to celebrate February 14, but not in the form of Valentine's Day, but somehow more original, below is a list of other holidays that are celebrated in the world on this day. You may not find it difficult to find something suitable for yourself in this list and celebrate this day differently than most.

If your profession is connected with the world of digital technologies, you have a legitimate reason to celebrate February 14 as your professional holiday - Computer Engineer and Programmer Day. It is on February 14 that the “ancestor” of all modern computers, created in 1946 specifically for the US military, “celebrates” its birthday.

If the holiday of all lovers annoys you with too romantic atmosphere and an abundance of sugary pink “valentines”, you can celebrate this day “anti-Valentine's Day” - the International Day of Single Oddities. This peculiar holiday was founded in opposition to St. Valentine's Day and is celebrated with a fair amount of sarcasm - with images of broken or black hearts and slogans like “Solitude is cool” or “I don't need anyone”, etc.

Book lovers can celebrate Book Giving Day on February 14 and give gifts to their acquaintances and friends (the main thing here is not to make a mistake and give a fan of Russian classics something in the “Fifty Shades of Gray” style).

Lovers and experts in the French language can also celebrate this day - it was on this day in 842 that an agreement was first concluded in Old French between the Frankish and German kings (before that, such agreements were usually concluded in Latin).

On the same day, a number of Catholic countries celebrate the day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, better known for the fact that they created the Cyrillic alphabet.

In the United States, February 14, in addition to St. Valentine's Day, is also celebrated as “Read to Your Child” Day. This call to parents to pay more attention to the intellectual development of children will never lose its relevance.

February 14 is also celebrated:

  • friend’s day (in Finland);
  • honoring parents’ day (in India);
  • Cream Chocolate Candy Day (a legitimate excuse to eat a whole box of chocolates);
  • organ donor day.

In addition, on February 14, the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar took place, which we use to this day.
