The authorities of the island state of Barbados in the Caribbean are demanding money from the British actor, the star of the series “Sherlock” Benedict Cumberbatch, for the fact that once one of his ancestors was the owner of a sugar cane plantation on the island and the black slaves who worked on it, writes “Komsomolskaya Pravda”.

In the first half of the XVIII century, the seventh great-grandfather of the actor became the owner of 250 black slaves in Barbados, which at that time belonged to the British crown. Slavery in Barbados was abolished in 1834, and the British government was forced to pay huge cash payments to former slave owners “for the loss of human property”. In today's dollar terms, Cumberbatch's ancestors received about 4,5 million USD.

-All descendants of white plantation owners who profited from the slave trade should be asked to pay reparations, including the Cumberbatch family, - said David Denny, Secretary General of the Caribbean Peace and Integration Movement.
