The International Union for Conservation of Nature has included dugongs, rare species of mollusks and corals in the list of endangered marine animals, reports “MIR 24”.
Dugongs are a species of marine mammals of the dugong family, resembling seals. There are no other representatives of this family left, and the dugongs themselves are on the verge of extinction. They live mainly in the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, off the northern coast of Australia and New Guinea. They are often killed by falling into fishing nets, being injured by the engines of ships and due to water pollution.
