Hong Kong is one of the leaders in the number of cars with non-standard license plates, which are also called “vanity marks”, writes the Asiaone website.

Personalized plaques with words instead of numbers as license plates are auctioned off by the Hong Kong Government Department of Transportation, sometimes valued at more than ten million Hong Kong dollars (1 USD equals approximately 7,81 Hong Kong dollars). Examples of such non-standard signs include Batman, Bimbo, Hotpot, Hashtag, Beijing.

A record 26 million Hong Kong dollars was paid for a W plate in 2021, which is now known to grace a Lamborghini car. In second place is a plate with the number “28”, sold in 2016 for 18,1 million Hong Kong dollars.

Numbers with the number 8 in Hong Kong and in general in Chinese culture are considered lucky. The number 13 is also popular here.
