On Piel Island in Cumbria, Britain, has been announced a search for a king or queen to run a XIV-century castle and a 300 years old legendary pub. Those, who interested can apply and according to tradition, he will be offered a contract for 10 years, according to bbc.com. It is noted, that the “monarch” will need to manage the island and serve the pub, surrounding area and campsite, as well as monitor the toilet and shower. The coronation of a new manager usually takes place in the 300 years old Ship Inn pub: the new-made "king" is seated on the throne and alcohol is poured over his head.
A new manager for the island, located near the city of Barrow, which can only be reached by ferry, is hoped to be found by the summer season. The area of Piel Island is about 20 hectares. In addition to the pub, there are three more buildings and the ruins of a XIV-century castle. Following the departure of the previous tenants, activists have launched a petition to save the island, which they call the "jewel in the crown" of the region and a vital part of the local historical heritage.
