UNDP and partners establish a dialogue with vulnerable youth

UNDP and the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of Turkmenistan completed a three-day training for the national partners from all velayats of the country on “Facilitation of dialogues with vulnerable youth” within the framework of the Turkmenistan Country Component of the Global Project on “Strengthening Resilience to Violent Extremism in Asia” (STRIVE Asia). A joint EU-UN partnership.”

STRIVE Asia project assistants and trainers, who successfully completed a week-long online training of trainers on “Training skills and Facilitation of dialogues with vulnerable youth”, conducted a training for national partners in 6 pilot cities, which are Ashgabat, Dashoguz, Mary, Tejen, Turkmenabat, and Turkmenbashy. Specialists of local Employment Departments of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of Turkmenistan, Hakimliks, police departments, Youth Organization and Women's Union, who are members of the advisory groups formed as part of the project implementation activities, actively participated in the trainings.

The aim of the training was to improve facilitation skills of service providers in successfully conducting dialogues with youth, especially vulnerable youth, strengthening interpersonal skills and interaction with a group of young people. Participants also improved their understanding of specialty of working with vulnerable youth that include motivation and consulting skills, verbal and non-verbal communication, empathy and active listening. The training was also effective in improving knowledge on professional ethics and anti-discriminatory approach in the practice of mentoring vulnerable population, including youth.

After completion of the training a roundtable was organized in all pilot cities with active participation of youth. Participant discussed the needs and interests of youth, their vision and challenges they face in employment. Young men and women who participated in previous UNDP projects and succeeded in self-employment also participated in the roundtables to share their experiences and motivate other young people to discover available self-employment opportunities.

The Country Component of the Global Project on “Strengthening Resilience to Violent Extremism in Asia” (STRIVE Asia). A joint EU-UN partnership” aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities by supporting public PVE initiatives, supporting government and public organizations to achieve goals related to preventing and countering violent extremism among vulnerable youth. The specific goal is to ensure that key government agencies and civil society organizations are better prepared to participate in achieving PVE goals. The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of Turkmenistan is a key national partner of the project.

Implementation period: 2021-2022.
