The Asian Football Confederation has officially informed the national football associations of the possible cancellation of the AFC Cup 2020, thepress service of FC “Istiqlol” reports.
The AFC official letter States that after the announcement of the postponement of the competition in March and April 20 20, the Asian Football Confederation planned to resume the AFC 2020 Cup matches after extensive discussions with participating national associations and other interested parties to finalize the format and new dates for the competition.
However, there was no interest in any of the Asian countries hosting a centralized tournament in groups F, G and H (ASEAN). The AFC also failed to finalize the host countries for the centralized tournament for groups D (Central zone) and E (Eastern zone), while the Bahrain Football Association (host side in group A) requested that the tournament be moved to 2021.
Based on the above-mentioned issues, the AFC has contacted its respective committees for discussion and decision-making, and the results will be reported to the national football associations later.
The centralized tournament with the participation of clubs from Tajikistan (Istiqlol and Khujand), as well as the Champions of Kyrgyzstan (Dordoi) and
Turkmenistan (Altyn Asyr) was to be held from October 20 to November 4.
The AFC Cup is the second most important club football tournament held by the Asian Football Confederation among the winners and runners-up of Championships and Cup winners of countries whose level of football development is not high enough to participate in the AFC Champions League.
