Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), sent a letter to the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the State news Agency of our country reports.

In her message, the head of the UN structure expressed regret that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was forced to postpone her visit to Turkmenistan earlier this year, as well as hope that she will be able to come to the country in the near future.

Natalia Kanem admits that Turkmenistan interested her in the results in reducing preventable maternal mortality and morbidity: the country has one of the lowest rates in the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The letter highlights the effectiveness of the Turkmen government's measures on reproductive health in the framework of the national health policy and the joint country program of Turkmenistan and UNFPA for the period 2016-2020. In the context of a pandemic, investment in this area is a strategic move, she believes.

Ms. Kanem assured President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov of the support of the national health system, which the structure headed by Her is ready to provide in order to consolidate the achieved results, and expressed gratitude for the continued support of the UNFPA program in Turkmenistan.
