Last Saturday, Turkmenistan celebrated the international day of yoga, established by the UN General Assembly in 2014, which established its annual celebration since 2015 – June 21.

According to the newspaper "Neutral Turkmenistan", this year this annual holiday held in our country moved from the center of yoga and traditional medicine, located in the capital's sports complex “Bagtyyarlyk”, to the homes of Turkmen people and was held in a digital format. The event was organized by the Embassy of India in Turkmenistan with the support of the government of Turkmenistan.

In Turkmenistan this holiday is celebrated from the moment of its announcement. At that time, the initiative put forward by India was approved by a record number of 175 UN member States. The Resolution notes "the importance of individuals and groups making healthier choices and leading lifestyles that promote good health." In this regard, the world health organization also called on member governments to help their citizens overcome physical inactivity, which is one of the top ten causes of death worldwide and is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

After the first Celebration-June 21, 2015-the international day of yoga becomes more important every year, attracting new followers. After all, yoga is more than physical activity. It embodies the unity of soul and body, thought and action, a holistic approach that is valuable for our health and well-being. yoga is not only physical exercise, it is a way to discover a sense of unity with yourself, the world around you and nature. The benefits of yoga are numerous: reducing stress hormones, improving physical health, helping to increase concentration, improve balance, and keep your mind fresh.

The center for yoga and traditional medicine in Ashgabat was opened during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Turkmenistan in July 2015. Yoga and Ayurveda experts from India were seconded to the center for regular yoga classes and consultations on Ayurveda.

Today, as an academic subject of the Department of restorative and alternative medicine, yoga therapy is studied at the State Medical University of Turkmenistan at the faculties of sports medicine and medical. And in the Medical Advisory center of Turkmenistan, medical specialists use it in their medical practice.

According to a press release distributed by the Embassy of India in Turkmenistan, this year's yoga Day is celebrated in a digital format. This is an attempt to promote the theme of this year's yoga Day, "Gargharse yoga (yoga at home)" and "Yoga with family", which is becoming more important in light of the current pandemic. Therefore, on June 20, 2020, the Embassy organized an online session of the "General yoga Protocol" as part of the digital yoga Day, as well as “Yoga for elders”, “Yoga for immunity”.

"The event was attended by yoga lovers from Ashgabat and all over the world," the press release notes. We hope to conduct more online sessions in order to spread the message of yoga and the world beyond. We sincerely hope that we will all unite in one family, an example of which is the ancient Indian philosophy "Vasudeva Kudumbakam".
