A new law has come into force in Turkmenistan equating corrupt officials with drug traffickers and prohibiting the use of pardons and amnesties against them. The relevant law on amendments and additions to the criminal code of Turkmenistan was signed by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and published today in the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.

"In respect of convicted persons found guilty of crimes related to corruption and illegal trafficking in drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors, acts of pardon and Amnesty are not applied," the new Law says.

The ban on pardons and Amnesty for drug traffickers was adopted in 2015.

The new law is aimed at strengthening the fight against corruption.

"I remind all the leaders that we have always waged and will continue to wage an irreconcilable fight against corrupt officials and bribe-takers," President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said earlier this month on state television, commenting on the information of Prosecutor General of Turkmenistan Batyr Atdayev about the criminal acts of ex-interior Minister Isgender Mulikov and former head of the state migration service Meilis Nobatov, which was heard at a visiting meeting of the State security Council.

We will remind, both grief-heads were condemned for corruption and bribery, having admitted on air of television in deeds and having repented of the crimes.
