The international platform, going beyond the region, the upcoming first Caspian Economic Forum, which will be held on August 12 in the Avaza National Tourist Zone, is invaluable for the further development of cooperation not only among the Caspian countries but also all interested parties. On the eve of this major international event, the Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Mrs. Christine Weigand, gave an exclusive interview to Turkmenportal on the occasion of the first Caspian Economic Forum:

– On behalf of the United Nations Permanent Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Ms. Elena Panova, let me begin by congratulating the Government of Turkmenistan, his Excellency the President of Turkmenistan, and the Turkmen people on the upcoming First Caspian Economic Forum (CEF). This is really a great achievement of the country in strengthening cooperation in the Caspian Sea.

This event demonstrates the development of fruitful cooperation with the countries of the Caspian region. Turkmenistan makes a significant contribution to the realization of the impressive economic, energy and transport potential of the Caspian Sea, fully contributing to ensuring the status of the sea of peace, friendship and harmony.

The agenda of the upcoming economic forum will cover a wide range of issues related to the development of cooperation and the role of trade and the economy of the Caspian region in a global context. It will also include discussions on how to attract investment in industry, energy, trade, tourism and other sectors of the economy of the Caspian states that are of mutual interest.

I am pleased to announce that the United Nations in Turkmenistan will hold a side event “Funding in support of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” during the Forum.

As you may know, Turkmenistan presented its first Voluntary National Review in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at the High-level Political Forum on July 18. As a country that was one of the first in the world, officially adopted all 17 SDGs and incorporated them into national development plans and strategies. Turkmenistan sees this as an opportunity to strengthen national policies to achieve sustainable development. The agenda for the period up to 2030 is the country's main strategy and means of achieving balanced state development in three dimensions - social, economic and environmental.

This side event is aimed at demonstrating the progress achieved by Turkmenistan in implementing the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, as well as providing an opportunity to discuss the role of financing in implementing the 2030 Agenda in Turkmenistan, the countries of the Caspian region and beyond.

In addition to presenting the results of the first Voluntary National Review of Turkmenistan, a number of brief materials will be presented followed by a discussion to explore the possibilities and problems of financing, review progress in the implementation of the Addis Ababa Action Program and discuss financing for development issues that are relevant to the Caspian states, countries of the North and Central Asia, as well as outside the region.

We believe that the presentations and discussions will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on national initiatives, as well as various global and regional development financing initiatives that are being implemented by the United Nations, including the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and international financial institutions.

Let me conclude by wishing the participants a very productive dialogue and successful Forum results. We look forward to meeting you.
