Ashgabat celebrates 220 years since the birth of Alexander Pushkin

In Ashgabat, at the monument to Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, located on the street named after him, students of the Joint Turkmen-Russian comprehensive school n/a A.S. Pushkin, as well as numerous admirers of the Russian poet, gathered, the website "Turkmenistan: the golden age" reports.

Tribute to the memory of Great Pushkin, the 220th anniversary of whose birth is celebrated this year, was paid by bouquets of flowers and poetic lines by gathered in the picturesque square of the capital.

In 1899, the Ashgabat intelligentsia came up with the idea of perpetuating Pushkin’s memory in the centenary year of the poet. The collection of money began, contributions were made not only by wealthy people, but also by workers, artisans, and soldiers. Procurement of materials and the construction of a monument, designed by the architect A.I. Butuzov, took about two years. And finally, in 1911, a high column-pedestal, topped with a bust of the poet, was installed. The monument is installed in one of the picturesque corners of Ashgabat. The monument survived the civil war and the Ashgabat earthquake of 1948, and to the 200th anniversary of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was restored. The monument annually becomes the center of the ceremonial laying of flowers on the poet's birthday.
